One convention that we followed in our video was the use of beauty shots - very close up shots on the artist's face. For these shots we used an 85mm lens in order to achieve a narrow depth of field which is more flattering as it softens the lines on the face. It also makes the blackground slightly blurred out, giving a softer feel to the shot.
We used a lot of beauty shots because it emphasises the artist's pretty, delicate features and also means that the audience gains facial recognition after watching the video, which is important for an up and coming artist.
Jorja Smith's video for 'Where Did I Go' also constantly utilises the convention of beauty shots, as shown opposite :
This video was one of her first ever videos, back when she was a relatively unknown artist, and filling this music video with shots of her face means that the audience and fans can recognise her in the future, gain familiarity with her.
